About Naadam
Mongolia has a long-standing tradition of celebrating summer with festivals and festivities. According to The Secret History of the Mongols, written in the 13th century, Naadam celebrations took place in the seventh lunar month.
The tradition of celebrating the Three Manly Games as a state festival dates back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Mongolians have practiced wrestling to demonstrate their strength and skill, archery to test their accuracy, and horse racing to showcase their finest horses for centuries.
In 1206, the Year of the Red Tiger, Genghis Khan established the Great Mongol Empire. From that time, grand state ceremonies and celebrations featuring the Three Manly Games became an important tradition.
The Three Manly Games of Naadam are:
Mongolian Wrestling – A traditional competition that showcases strength, technique, and skill.
Horse Racing – A celebration of Mongolia’s legendary horses and nomadic heritage.
Archery – A traditional sport that tests precision, concentration, and accuracy.
The National Naadam Festival
The official opening ceremony of Mongolia’s National Naadam Festival is traditionally held on July 11 at 11:00 AM, when the President of Mongolia delivers the opening address.
Beyond the national celebration in Ulaanbaatar, every province and many individual soums organize their own local Naadam festivals. These celebrations offer communities across Mongolia an opportunity to preserve their traditions and celebrate their cultural heritage.

Parade of Athletes: Mongolian wrestlers, archers, and ankle-bone shooters enter the stadium in a ceremonial parade, showcasing the traditional sports of the Three Manly Games.
Wrestling
Add description here…Mongolian wrestling, known as Bökh, is one of the most treasured traditions of the Naadam Festival. Wrestlers dressed in traditional costumes compete in a test of strength, balance, technique, and determination. Unlike many other wrestling styles, there are no weight classes or time limits in traditional Mongolian wrestling. Each match celebrates the spirit, courage, and sportsmanship passed down through generations. Watching these powerful athletes compete is an unforgettable way to experience Mongolia’s proud nomadic heritage.
Archery
Mongolian archery is an ancient tradition deeply connected to the country’s nomadic lifestyle and history. At Naadam, skilled archers demonstrate remarkable concentration, accuracy, and control as they shoot at targets using traditional bows and arrows. The competition showcases techniques passed down through generations and reflects the importance of archery in Mongolian culture. Experience the quiet intensity and timeless beauty of this traditional sport.
Horse race
Horse racing is one of the most exciting highlights of the Naadam Festival and a powerful symbol of Mongolia’s nomadic culture. Unlike conventional track racing, Mongolian races take place across vast open landscapes, where young jockeys ride specially trained horses over long distances. The sight of horses thundering across the steppe captures the freedom, endurance, and deep bond between Mongolians and their horses. It is a spectacular celebration of the nomadic spirit and Mongolia’s enduring equestrian heritage.
